If Italy is the queen of pasta, it’s for a reason. And that’s because we find a multitude of types of Italian pasta. They are almost endless! That’s why today we’re going to delve into a specific type: stuffed pasta. With meat, vegetables, cheese… Discover the different varieties!

What do you prefer: pasta filled with meat, cheese, or vegetables? Whatever your choice, we offer you up to 10 types of stuffed pasta so that your knowledge goes beyond the classic ravioli.

1. Tortellini

The first of the stuffed pasta dishes that we propose on this list is some delicious tortellini, a must in Italian cuisine. Tortellini is an Italian pasta filled with minced meat and parmesan cheese and in the shape of a ring.

It is worth noting that, although any type of sauce is allowed for stuffed pasta – such as bolognese – the traditional recipe is prepared with meat broth. These are called tortellini in Brodo and are an irresistible spoon dish.

2. Ravioli

We’ve already announced it: the classic type of stuffed Italian pasta is raviolo. Everyone knows the square shape of ravioli and its ridged edges. As for its interior, any type of ingredient can be included: cheese, vegetables, fruit… But perhaps its most popular filling is beef. In addition, tomato sauce is usually the favorite to accompany this delicacy of Italian cuisine.

That’s why they couldn’t be missing from the menu at La Mafia se sienta a la mesa. In our fresh pasta section, you can delight yourself with our beef ravioli or with the boletus and truffle ravioli A real delicacy!

3. Tortelloni

Did you know that Tortellini has an older brother? Yes, tortelloni. These are usually filled with spinach and ricotta. However, in the Italian region of Emilia Romagna, they prefer them with prosciutto. And to eat them? You can choose from these sauces to accompany stuffed pasta.

4. Gnocchi

Or gnocchi. Another classic among stuffed pasta. Gnocchi dough is made from potato, flour, and ricotta. To accompany it, a pesto sauce can be a ten.

And yes, gnocchi can be stuffed! That’s how we serve them in our Italian restaurants: pasta filled with Gorgonzola cheese, which we make in our workshop.

5. Rettangoli

Another stuffed pasta we suggest is a rectangle. Very similar to ravioli, the difference is that these are rectangular and their edges are not ridged. They are delicious! And to eat them? We have an offer you can’t refuse: a rectangle stuffed with suckling pig and covered with meat sauce and figs, fresh raspberries, pine nuts, and raisins. What an incredible combination!

6. Cappelleti

What is the name of the stuffed pasta that resembles a little hat? That’s right, cappelletti! These are made from squares or circles that are folded afterward. The most famous ones are filled with cheese, specifically ricotta, and this stuffed pasta is very typical at Christmas in the north of the country.

At La Mafia se sienta a la mesa we have given a twist to the traditional Italian version, as on our menu you can now order the exquisite free-range chicken and plum grandi cappelli in chef’s sauce with prawns. A delicious sea and mountain dish!

7. Sorrentino

Another typical Italian stuffed pasta is the Sorrentino. Sorrentinos are a kind of rounded ravioli that are a little larger. If you don’t know how to prepare this fresh stuffed pasta, at La Mafia se sienta a la mesa we’ll show you how we prepare it: some large sorrentino, stuffed with meat (specifically pork ribs) and bathed in barbecue ragout sauce with crispy Italian bacon. Finger-licking good!

8. Manicotti

This stuffed pasta reminds us a bit of cannelloni. It has a cylindrical shape and the ends are not closed. Its preparation is simple: you fill it with whatever you like (meat, cheese, vegetables, etc.), cover it with sauce and bake it. A perfect main dish!

9. Agnolotti

And from a cylinder to a crescent moon. Agnolotti are a kind of mini-dumplings, which are filled with roasted or stewed meat. This stuffed pasta is typical of the Piedmont region and is usually served with butter and cheese on top. Delicious!

10. Panzerotti

Once again, the crescent shape, but this time cheese is the filling. Panzerotti are similar to calzone pizza and, like the latter, they are delicious. In our Italian restaurants, we fill them with foie, bacon,  and caramelized onions; they can be accompanied by various kinds of sauces: from ragù to bolognese, quattro formaggi o, or carbonara, among others.
